The Strength of
America’s Surface Fleet
BY MCPON (RET.) MIKE STEVENS, NAVY LEAGUE CEO
The United States Navy’s surface fleet stands as one of the most visible symbols
of American power and commitment around the world. From the icy waters of the
Arctic to the contested seas of the Indo-Pacific, our destroyers, cruisers, amphibs
and littoral combat ships operate every day to protect freedom of navigation, deter
aggression and reassure allies. These ships, and the Sailors who serve aboard them,
form the backbone of our nation’s maritime strength.
Surface forces carry out the hard work of presence. They are often the first to arrive
and the last to leave, providing command and control, air and missile defense,
logistics and humanitarian assistance. They keep vital sea lanes open, respond to
crises and project stability in regions where uncertainty is growing. Their mission
tempo is unrelenting, but so is their professionalism.
Maintaining that edge demands readiness, modern shipbuilding and continued
investment in both technology and people. Programs such as the DDG(X) and
Constellation-class frigates are vital steps toward ensuring our Navy remains lethal
and sustainable in the decades ahead. But it’s the Sailors, the deckplate leaders
and technical experts who transform these platforms into instruments of national
purpose. Every success at sea begins with their training, leadership and dedication.
The Navy League of the United States is proud to stand with our surface warriors.
Across more than 176 councils worldwide, our members support the fleet in tangible
ways, adopting ships, honoring crews, hosting commissioning ceremonies and
caring for families when deployments stretch long. We work closely with Navy
leadership, industry partners and local communities to ensure every ship and Sailor
knows that America stands behind them.
Our advocacy extends beyond the waterfront. The Navy League educates the public
and Congress on the essential role of sea power in national security and economic
prosperity. Through our publications, congressional engagements and programs
like Sea-Air-Space, we connect citizens with the mission of the Navy, Marine
Corps, Coast Guard and U.S.-Flag Merchant Marine, ensuring the value of maritime
strength remains front of mind for decision-makers and taxpayers alike.
The surface fleet represents more than ships; it represents resolve. It reminds the
world that America will defend freedom of the seas and those who sail them. As
the Navy League continues to support, educate and advocate, we do so with deep
respect for every Sailor who stands the watch and every ship that bears our flag
across the horizon.
