Anchorage VA Standdown

Friday, 20 September, I attended the VA’s Standdown for Veterans at Ted Stevens Airport Terminal 2. I wanted to thank all the various agencies who came out to help the veterans who attended. There were about 150-200 veterans and more than 20 help agencies offering all kinds of services. Key for a lot of them was the wonderful lunch and the free clothing. However, some examples of the help agencies specifically offered: Disabled Veterans National Foundation gave a $25 debit card, a small electronic speaker, and a handout (HO) on Grants, Homeless to housing, Food Assistance and self-care on-line classes; A map for Anchorage bike paths; VA Homeless Veterans Services HOs one I grabbed, Talking to Employers…when your past is less than perfect; Food Bank Alaska showing a calendar of Anchorage hot meals and food distribution sites, SNAP text line, 907-891-8913 for assistance; A Job Hunting Handbook; Anchorage Community Emergency & Advocacy Resources booklet; Department of Health & Human Services with HOs on Resources for homeless prevention and essential services and 2nd one on homeless shelter resources; Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska HO on Community Resource Guide for all agencies; Cook Inlet Housing Authority with Rental Applications; Anchorage Health Dept’s Aging & Disability Resource Center with two Community Resource Lists; Alaska Housing Finance Corp with an inventory listing of Independent Living Homes/Facilities; VA Behavioral Health gave small first aid kits; VA Care Team hand several HOs for accessing your Care Team; Summit and Tactical Recovery offered valuable services; First Responders in Recovery offered treatment centers; and a lot of other items like pill boxes, locks, a little candies or peanuts. Thanks to the VA for setting up this important rendezvous. There is also one in Fairbanks and Soldotna during the year.
